NoCore

“NoCore” is a community art project based on choreographic workshops about gender expectation and multiculturalism, with the resulting creation of live or media performances. The first version of this long artistic research has been organized in 2017: since then Beniamino Borghi has taken the commitment towards this important subject and he has emphasized the value of creating a sense of community.
In all the editions, the participants were interested in developing an artistic process sharing their thoughts about masculinity, gender norms, sexual fluidity and passing through their own different life experiences and cultures of belonging.
We welcome to participate in this project, people of any gender, any age, any sexual orientation and any nationality.

“NoCore: Strömfors” is a dance-music performance created during two weekend-long choreographic workshops, using, as a venue, the old factory in the village of Ruotsinpyhtää (Loviisa).
This is the result of the seventh edition of “NoCore” community dance project, which deals with gender expectations and multiculturalism.
The performers have engaged their body in a creative way, discovering how dance can create music and how it can express our thoughts about social norms and community. The aim of the project is to give the opportunity to the participants to tell their stories and to find a way to translate their emotions into movements.
The participants are people of any gender, of all ages, of any nationalities and with or without any performance experiences.
The sound design by Tatu Vanhatalo integrates the movements of the dancers and their sounds in a multi-layered and sensorial performance, where we can perceive music from a different perspective.
The scenography and videos are designed by Ilmari Paananen to transform the spaces of the Schneider Factory into a dramaturgical journey through different phases of work life.
The performing artist Bambú has contributed to the work by assisting, filming and performing.
The rest of the group are voluntary members of the workshops.
“NoCore: Strömfors” shows how the actions of people, created in groups, in
combination with the visual and the musical elements of welding, beating, drilling and
breaking iron components, converge in a stream of power… the manpower.

*********************************************************************

“Untold-scapes” is a performative and multimedia exhibition where, through different video installations and live/virtual performances, it is possible to look deeply at the stories of men that have faced discriminations related to gender expectation.
The name -SCAPE, a combining form extracted from landscape, denoting “an extensive view, scenery,” or “a picture or representation” of such a view, as specified by the initial element: cityscape; moonscape; seascape. [based on The Random House Unabridged Dictionary, © Random House, inc. 2022]
The UNTOLD refers to all the thoughts, stories, opinions, experiences, desires that we ALL often don’t tell to anybody for different reasons: for not being judged, for not revealing our truths, for not feeling rejected or for a simple difficulty of expressing them. But some people have untold backgrounds for not risking their lives!
Body movements and the artistic research combining video and dance, can help us to express deep feelings without using the words, in some kind of ritual action that lets us free from our pasts.
The visitors are free to explore the exhibition in the way that they prefer. There are interactive installations where the visitors can participate and feel to be part of the community. Everyday we will do a short performance focusing on one of the stories displayed. Afterwards we will facilitate a small workshop for the audience to give the artistic tools to be able to transform their own untold stories into small performative actions.
Workshops are facilitated in English and Basic Finnish. The workshops are based on the research through free movements and authentic movements, and it does not require any experience in dancing.

The performative exhibition has been supported by Svenska Kulturfonden, Konstsamfundet, Loviisan Kaupunki, Strömfors Ruukki and Loviisan Tanssiopisto.

Nocore: Rosebud in May 2021

(Project Rosebud trial performances)

Beniamino Borghi, Tatu Vanhatalo and the working group built a performance that was streamed with interactive elements. It was shown live in the classrooms of three high schools. The performance reached over 60 students who used the interactive website actively, producing content for the performers to use. It received high remarks from teachers, performance artists and equality consultants, pointing to the value and speciality of the project.

Nocore: Rosebud working group consisted of:

Beniamino Borghi

Tatu Vanhatalo

Bambu

Niko Liinamaa

+ dancers Leevi Mettinen & Anna-Kaarina Jokinen

+ tech designer Juho Kastemaa

+ producer Tuure Kaukua

+ light designer Ilmari Paananen

+ costume designer Frida

+ consultancy Ekvalita

+ support Zodiak

We wanted to give a voice to youth who are in the midst of being heavily affected by cultural norms, especially by the expectations and restrictions related to gender. This led to building three interactive live-stream performances for high school student groups, that were done in collaboration with Tanssiartesaani ry and Ekvalita ab, and funded by Taike and Svenska Kulturfonden. Together with tech-company Lemon Tech, we built a web-based questionnaire for the audience and used the answers as part of the performance.

Our target was to create awareness on gender issues, helping the youth to realize and accept some of their own femininities and masculinities and recognizing stereotypes.

Reciting and remarking the words provided by the audience, while accompanied by music and dance, was a powerful interactive method to build this trial performance upon. On the other hand, face-to-face interaction was lacking as was the opportunity for open discussion.

We decided, going forth, that the entire stream should be a solid interactive performance art piece and that for the awareness on gender issues we would need a website.

CHOREOGRAPHIC WORKSHOP ABOUT UNTOLD STORIES 2019

The workshop is the fourth version of this long artistic research by Beniamino Borghi about gender and migration: a project that meets the expressive gestures of physical theatre and dance techniques for expressing stories of people that have been in the margins of the society for their gender identity and/or for their ethnicity and cultural background.

What the movements say about you? How do you stand, sit, talk and watch the others? How you interact with others? Still in many of our countries there are prejudices, intolerance and ignorance towards diversity. In many countries people have to hide their inner identities and to become empty shells that could follow the norms and the rules of the gender binary and misogynist society.

The aim of the project is to give the opportunity to the participants to tell their stories and find a way to translate in movements their emotions. Participants have to be comfortable to talk and research about gender fluidity, privileges and been marginalized.

The workshop is intended for people of any gender, of all ages and with or without any performance experiences. The course is held in English and Finnish. There’s a possibility for a demo performance as a result of the workshops. Participating in the performance is voluntary. Extra rehearsals and performances date to be confirmed.
