Beniamino Borghi
Beniamino Borghi is an Italian-born choreographer and interdisciplinary dance artist based in Porvoo, Finland, with work expanding throughout the South-East region of Finland. Since moving to Finland in 2011, he has developed an interdisciplinary approach that merges contemporary dance, visual arts, and community participation. His practice moves between dance, scenography, and multimedia, exploring how the body interacts with space, objects, and technology.
Choreographer and Dance Practitioner
Borghi’s choreographic work ranges from ensemble performances with orchestras to minimalist solo pieces in dialogue with video projections. His artistic interest lies in the relationship between body and environment, especially through objects, props, and scenographic elements. His performances span from structured choreographies using mirrors and cardboard boxes to improvisational works built around clothing or everyday materials such as apples.
His practice often extends beyond conventional stages, taking form as site-specific performances and performative installations in art galleries, museums, and public spaces.
Community Dance Projects
Borghi has facilitated numerous community-based projects, combining workshops and participatory processes that culminate in live performances, dance films, or exhibitions.
The NoCore series, initiated in 2017, explores identity, belonging, and transformation through collective creation. As a member of both the LGBTQ+ and migrant communities, Beniamino originally developed NoCore as a personal exploration of connection and safety through art, which has since evolved into a platform for others to share movement, play, and creative expression.
Recent NoCore projects have been presented as performative exhibitions and site-specific works at Caisa – City of Helsinki Cultural Centre, Näsin Kartano (Porvoo), and Strömfors Factory (Loviisa).
Studies and Artistic Research
Trained as an industrial designer (Politecnico di Milano, M.Sc. 2003), Beniamino combines the precision of design with the sensitivity of movement.
His ongoing artistic research project, Dance with/from/for Objects, investigates how everyday materials—especially pillows—can act as partners in choreography and participation. Rooted in Critical Performance Design, this research forms part of his Master’s studies in Dance Education at the Stockholm University of the Arts (Uniarts).
Educator
As a dance educator, Beniamino is committed to making contemporary dance accessible and inclusive. He facilitates workshops and participatory sessions for youth, migrants, and community groups, blending somatic practice with choreographic improvisation. His teaching focuses on movement as dialogue between body and environment, fostering creativity, empathy, and self-expression.
Visual Artist
Beniamino’s visual and performative works exist at the intersection of dance, design, and media art. His performative exhibitions combine movement, installation, and video, transforming spaces into immersive environments where dance becomes a visual and spatial language.
Recent exhibitions and performances have been presented in collaboration with Caisa – City of Helsinki Cultural Centre, Näsin Kartano (Porvoo), and Strömfors Art Gallery (Loviisa), where he continues to explore how choreography can reshape physical and emotional environments.
Curator and Collaborator
As a curator and artistic producer, Beniamino develops projects that foster collaboration between artists, disciplines, and communities. In partnership with Art in Lov and Stödföreningen för Lovisa Konst, he contributes to the Art in Lov Residency, inviting and supporting artists in dialogue with Tanssiartesaani ry’s productions.
Locally, Borghi collaborates with Loviisa Contemporary ry, working as curator, producer, and artist for the Kucku Festival, which for over a decade has showcased diverse artistic expressions in Loviisa.
As the founder and artistic director of Tanssiartesaani ry, he also curates and directs Winterdances, a multidisciplinary festival presenting live performances and dance films in Porvoo and Loviisa. The festival engages both students and the general public and collaborates internationally with Scenkonst Sörmland, which features Winterdances films in the Dansfilmsdagar Festival in Eskilstuna, Sweden.
